The Matru Sewa Sangh Institute of Social Work was established in 1958 as the “School of Social Work” with seven students which today has grown and expanded into a leading Institution of social work education in central India. The Institute has carved a niche for itself by its relentless pursuit of the upliftment of the society with a spirit of humanism; the spirit of social welfare; social justice; democratic values and the universal spirit of brotherhood by imparting professional knowledge, skills and attitude necessary for building a democratic society that is emancipated, enlightened and empowered.
Matru Sewa Sangh Institute of Social Work has been re-accredited by the UGC-NAAC with an ‘A’ grade. The Institute is recognised as the ‘Place for Higher Learning and Research’ by Rashtrasant Tukdoji Maharaj Nagpur University and also awarded by the Government of Maharashtra as ‘Best NSS Unit Award’ in 2015-16. The Institute has recognized PhD Guides in Social Work, Library & Information Science. The Institute has an excellent library which has more than 18,000 books in Social Work/Social Sciences. The campus is wifi enabled and the library has computer terminals exclusively for the students making it more academically productive and enriching.
The Institute offers Bachelor's (BSW) course, and Master's (MSW) course and PhD Programme. At the MSW level it offers specializations in the following fields of Social Work: i) Human Resource Management, ii) Family & Child Studies, iii) Rural, Urban & Tribal Community Development and iv) Medical & Psychiatric Social Work. From the last academic session the Institute has also started a value added Post Graduate Certificate Course in Counselling approved by the Department of Lifelong Learning and Extension, Rashtrasant Tukdoji Maharaj Nagpur University. Being a pioneering Institute of Social Work Education in Vidarbha, it sets standards for working with individuals, groups, communities and organizations in order to promote dignity, attain equality of rights, social justice, secularism and freedom. With the dynamic blend of theoretical and practical knowledge in Social Work Education, the Institute is committed to create cadre of professionals and grass root level workers who will strive towards building a society that is inclusive, free from exploitation and who will be sensitive to the emerging challenges at the local, regional, national and global level.
To strengthen the academic programmes, the Institute pioneered in field action projects like Childline, Family Counselling Centre, School Social Work and Community Action for Environment (CAFÉ) and Lifeline. Students are placed in field action projects of the Institute, different social work organizations, industries, municipal schools and ICDS Centres for their concurrent field work during the course of their study. They also carry out micro level social work research on different social problems.
